StickMop

What is a StickMop? It's a floor mop that's a stick and a rag. It's cheap. It's green. And there's no refills to buy.
"As soon as we cross the bridge everything switches to another language. The scrip-scrape-scrip of high heels across saltillo floor tiles. Mopping with a stick and a purple rag called la jerga instead of a mop." From Mexico Next Right, Caramelo, by Sandra Cisneros.
The StickMop is easy to make and there are no refills to buy, unlike a Swiffer, Shark Steam Mop or O-Cedar microfiber dust mop. Grab a rag and you're set. No one time use disposable paper here or expensive ShamWow fabric - just get your rag a bit damp and mop your floor.
Don't go crazy trying to clean your rags in a gallon of water every few minutes - that's not very green either. Just slightly dampen your rag and your floor will get clean. You can toss the rags in with your regular wash and keep your rag supply clean that way. Or for $40 you can get a Bona with a "washable" cloth. I'll give O-Cedar credit for encouraging reuse of their cloths - too bad their plastic swivel pops off when you apply pressure on their dust mop, and mine was a pain trying to get the elastic cloth over the wide flat base. Why bother when a stick will push a rag around the floor just fine? For tough jobs, use a little household vinegar and skip the chemicals in the paper stuff.
How green is the Swiffer? I think the StickMop is greener, uses fewer resources (so long as you don't clean your rag in detergent and a gallon of water every few minutes), and it's definitely cheaper. Ideal for the frugal friend in your life. Just ask Dub.
